A Few Points to Note...

  • ABK is all about honesty and goodwill. Bearing this in mind please only post books in farily good second-hand condition. No loose pages or torn covers please.
  • You are expected to cover the cost of posting your book within Australia to someone who has requested it. This should cost about $4.50 for a 500g novel and all evens out once you start redeeming your own points anyway.
  • Don't worry, there's no minimum books to keep listed at any time. This is just used to kick-start your swapping.
  • Karma Credits are not redeemable for cash or goods other than the books listed on this site. One Karma Credit = One book. At times we may run promotions offering additional credits.
  • This can be a good way of getting rid of unwanted books however don't just put up boring novels you hated. If you want good juju then post up a book you've loved!

About Us

ABK is manned and operated by Annie, Alaine and Sheree, three women dedicated to helping Aussies get more books for less dollars. We are passionate about books. Obsessed, even. You see we believe that a good story is like a hospital for the mind...and the past year there have definitely been times we've felt in need of mental hospitals!

We also believe in karma. There is nothing better than the conversation that comes after your friend has loved a book you recommend or lent her. For that reason we're passing on the good stories. Yes, we're keeping our absolute favourites on our shelves (they're like family heirlooms after all) but if we can bear to part with it, we're sending it on. In fact, just for the launch of this site, we even bought a couple of our absolute all-time favourites brand new to give away. From Bestsellers to New Releases, from Classics to undiscovered gems, you'll find a great range of books to swap. We know not everyone has the same taste though...so why not swap the novels that weren't quite your cup of tea? If there's anything we've learnt from one another it's that everyone's tastes are different.

We don't just want to create an Aussie book-swapping club either. We want to create a community. Did you swap a book? Tell us what you thought about it! Even better - review it. There'll be book reviews, reading challenges, online discussion groups and eventually maybe even meetings. Every Friday on our News and Reviews Section, we'll post a link to the latest Borders voucher, plus notify you of any other book sales we're aware of. If there's a book bargain to be had, we'll bag it for you. After all, let's be realistic, just because you swap books doesn't mean you will stop buying them. We might as well try and ease our credit card bills by buying them on sale.

Because we are a free site run by a Mother, a Daughter and a Best Friend, we are currently quite low-tech. This does mean a massive amount of manual entering and co-ordinating that we are happy to do. Having said this, if you come across an error or if something's gone astray, please contact us via email. We're really approachable and appreciate all feedback and suggestions.

With its lively dialogue and carefully researched period details, the novel reproduces a bygone era while charging it with timeless human emotion.

Joe Cinque's Consolation

Title: Joe Cinque's Consolation
Author: Helen Garner
Category: True Crime
Blurb: In October 1997 a clever young law student at ANU made a bizarre plan to murder her devoted boyfriend after a dinner party at their house. Some of the dinner guests – most of them university students – had heard rumours of the plan. Nobody warned Joe Cinque. He died one Sunday, in his own bed, of a massive dose of rohypnol and heroin. His girlfriend and her best friend were charged with murder.
Helen Garner followed the trials in the ACT Supreme Court. Compassionate but unflinching, this is a book about how and why Joe Cinque died. It probes the gap between ethics and the law; examines the helplessness of the courts in the face of what we think of as ‘evil'; and explores conscience, culpability, and the battered ideal of duty of care.
It is a masterwork from one of Australia's greatest writers.

Blurb: Nadia Stafford, a cop-turned-hit-woman, saddled in her first adventure with a killer vs. killer mission. After being retired from a Canadian police force for shooting a suspect dead, Nadia becomes a hit woman—temporarily, that is, while she waits for her lakeside lodge to take off—targeting smalltime career criminals for clients who are often their direct competitors. Now, she's teaming up with her mentor, Jack, to apprehend a hit man–turned–serial killer known as the Helter Skelter killer. As Nadia pursues the case deeper into the dangerous world of assassins and spies, she finds reason to suspect just about everybody in Armstrong's fine cast of shifty, complex characters. The sexual tension between Jack and Nadia is entirely believable, adding a compelling, organic layer to the suspense. Armstrong's expert plotting never falters, and she's able to keep ramping up the intensity throughout more than 500 pages—no easy feat—making this a top-notch entertainment sure to seduce fans of tough heroines.

Pick Me!********
Title: A Girl's Guide to Vampires
Author: Kate MacAllister
Category: Paranormal Romance
Blurb: All Joy Randall wants is a little old-fashioned romance, but when she participates in a "Goddess evoking" ceremony with her friend, Roxy, Joy finds out her future true love is a man with the potential to put her immortal soul in danger. Then, when she and Roxy attend a local GothFaire, Joy meets Raphael Griffin St. John, head of security, and she becomes even more bewildered because the dark and dangerous Raphael seems too close to her dreams for comfort. The Bookseller of Kabul

Title: The Bookseller of Kabul
Author: Asne Seierstad
Category: General Non-Fiction
Blurb: A female journalist from Norway moved in with the Khan family in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. Disguised as she was behind the bulky, shapeless burka and escorted always by a man and even in Western dress, she was somehow anonymous and accepted readily into the bookseller's large extended family. Her account is of the tragedy, contradictions, rivalries, and daily frustrations of a middle-class Afghan family. She accompanied the women as they shopped and dressed for a wedding and was privy to the negotiations for the marriage. She tells of the death by suffocation of a young woman who met her lover in secret, the bored meanderings of a 12-year-old boy forced to work 12-hour days selling candy in a hotel lobby, and of going on a religious pilgrimage with a restless, frustrated teen. All this is recounted with journalistic objectivity in spite of her close ties to the Khans.
